Counting Ourselves

2022 survey report

This new Counting Ourselves report is the eagerly awaited sequel to our first comprehensive national survey of trans and non-binary people, conducted in 2018.

With more than twice as many participants for our second survey, this report provides strong data on the new and persistent challenges faced by Aotearoa’s trans and non-binary communities.

It presents findings from our second survey, conducted between 1 September and 14 December 2022. This 2022 survey was completed by 2,631 trans and non-binary people aged between 14 – 86 from all regions in Aotearoa.

This community report of findings from the 2022 Counting Ourselves survey, published at the end of February 2025, belongs to all of us now. We encourage everyone to use the resource as evidence to push for changes needed to improve the health and wellbeing of trans and non-binary people.

Counting Ourselves is community-led research that couldn’t have been done without support from so many trans and non-binary community members, researchers, and allies.

We would like to thank every trans and non-binary person who filled out the survey, and community members and other experts who helped us design the questions, promoted the survey, gave invaluable feedback on drafts, and created these beautiful resources.
